Final Results - IJGT Classic at Oyster Reef Golf Club
Sasaki Succeeds in Girls Division
The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) returned to Oyster Reef Golf Club, April 13-14 for the IJGT Classic. Voted one of the top-20 courses in the Carolinas, the Rees Jones designed course challenged the field with narrow fairways and quick greens. Elite junior golfers representing 13 countries and nine states competed for national recognition and IJGT Merit Points in the two-day, 36-hole Event.
The IJGT Classic went down to the wire in all three divisions.
In the Boys 15-19 Division, Gus Uriostegui of Leon, Mexico and GeunTae Kim of SuSeong-DaeGu, South Korea emerged as leaders on Saturday, both carding 3-over-par 75 and taking home the KENTWOOL Lo-Pro Award. Kim and Uriostegui were not without competition for the final round as a pack of four players trailed them by only three strokes.
Kim came ready to play Sunday. He began the round with nine straight pars while Uriostegui struggled to get up-and-down. Kim nearly had a perfect round with only two bogeys.
"I've been working on my chipping," Kim said. "That is what helped me win."
This is Kim's second IJGT victory of the 2012-2013 season. Kim appears to be a hot streak as he has taken home titles in his last two appearances.
"It is awesome to win another event," Kim said.
Finishing just behind Kim was Taiga Fujii of Toyama-Shi, Japan, who received the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for carding even-par 72 in the final round. Fujii finished the tournament with a total of 6-over-par 150. Tied for third with tournament totals of 9-over-par 153 were Shogo Ito of Tokyo, Japan, André Hammer of Scania, Sweden, and Shosei Inokawa of Atamishi, Japan.
The Boys 14 & Under Division title went to Walker Campbell of Paget, Bermuda, after two days of consistent play. Campbell was tied for the lead with Kevin Ying of Shanghai, China, after a first-round 8-over-par 80.
Campbell was hungry for a win and came out strong with a 3-over-par 39 on the front nine during the final round. He carded a single birdie for the day on No. 7. Campbell struggled a bit on the back nine, but carded a second 8-over-par 80 to for a tournament total of 160. His consistency was just enough to edge out the competition.
This was a breakthrough victory for Campbell after competing in several tournaments during the 2013-2013 season.
"It feels great to get my first IJGT victory," Campbell said.
Ying finished in second place carding 167 for the Event. Alexandr Kuzmin of Almaty, Kazakhstan came in third place with a tournament total of 176.
While Moyu Sasaki of Tokyo, Japan took home the KENTWOOL Lo-Pro Award for the Girls Division Saturday for carding a 5-over-par 77, she was not without competition heading into the final round. Kathryn Crouch of Harker Heights, Texas trailed closely behind with a 7-over-par 79 in the first round.
Sasaki arrived Sunday morning ready to claim her victory. She started off her round with back-to-back pars and a birdie on No. 4 propelling her to a front-nine 38. She continued her success onto the back nine where she carded a 39 to card another 5-over-par 77, which earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.
"I was hitting my drives straight," Sasaki said. "I've been successful because I have been practicing a lot."
This is Sasaki's second IJGT victory for the 2012-2013 season. Of the 10 IJGT Events in which she has participated, Sasaki now has seven top-5 finishes on her resume.
Finishing just behind Sasaki was Rei Nakatani also of Tokyo, Japan, who finished with a 15-over-par 159 for the tournament. Crouch finished in third place with an 18-over-par 162.
